If the car will not select gears, revs without pulling, or grinds when you change gear, the clutch or gearbox may be failing. Driving on can cause more damage, so it is usually safer to stop and arrange recovery.
Signs of clutch or gearbox failure
- The engine revs but the car does not pull, or accelerates slowly
- A burning smell after pulling away or on hills
- Difficulty selecting gears, or gears crunching
- The gear lever stuck in or out of gear
- A heavy, sticking or very light clutch pedal
What to do
- Ease off and steer to a safe place while the car still moves.
- Put your hazard lights on and stop away from traffic.
- Do not force the gear lever or ride a slipping clutch, as this adds to the damage.
- Call for recovery to your garage or a chosen repairer.
